Website administrator, site author or web developers are often referred to as Webmaster. He is the person behind the developmental activity of a website. He also maintains the website, and looks over its presence in the World Wide Web. The person is responsible for both hardware and software operations. Speaking about the software side, a Webmaster is responsible for the entire design of the website, its presence in the Internet, generation of traffic, upgradation of the WebPages on regular basis, replying to comments posted by a user and maintains the quality to achieve a good page rank.

Apart from this, a Webmaster is also known to understand the importance of Web transaction software, Security, software, and payment processing software. A person titled as Webmaster is usually an HTML expert and manages the entire Web operations of a website. The operation of the website usually depends upon the scripting language that has been used and will also be responsible for changes that are carried out for such scripts. It is also important for a Webmaster to understand in detail about the configuration is that they shall be carrying out for Internet information services and Apache HTTP server. They also play the role of a server administrator when required.

A Webmaster can also be approached for designing a website. This is usually depends upon the content that should be included and is often referred to for a small-scale website. In a more clear way, a Webmaster can also be defined as the person responsible for increasing the sales of the business by selling the products over the Internet. This definition covers the entire aspect of technical and non-technical area. Construction, designing, marketing, advertising and maintenance usually fall under technical and non-technical area of a website. The person will overlook all these departments to ensure that high quality is maintained over the World Wide Web that reaches out to the needs of the customers.

A Webmaster is also responsible for management and regulation of a website. He is the sole provider who has the ability to grant permission to users that are registered on a website. The physical appearance and navigation of the website also falls under the core responsibility of a Webmaster. He is only responsible for placement of the content, but not the creation of the content. When we are speaking about a larger website, the Webmaster is also responsible for dealing with heavy income of e-mails.
